Catching Up - Vacation Pictures!

Back in October, we went to Puerto Rico for a few days.  We spent most of the time sitting around the pool but took time off one afternoon to go on tour of the Bacardi Factory and Old San Juan.  My birthday was a few days before we went away so we also celebrated down there by going to Morton's Steakhouse.  Here are a few of the layouts with vacation pictures.

I love how this layout turned out!  That Fancy Pants paper does all the work so all I had to do was add that Amy Tangerine journaling block with some lettering and called it a day!

This is a super simple layout that I completed for a Little Yellow Bicycle challenge on A Cherry on Top.  I really love that "love" and cloud transparencies.

I love this flower paper with the wood grain. When I was making the layout, I jumped the gun and wrote out the journaling under the photo (looking at other layouts, seems to be a resounding trend of mine).  Then I found a journal card that would work perfectly. Except I already journaled!  I ended up turning it upside down and added that cute wood plaque (also Fancy Pants) and some flower stickers from Pebbles Inc. since they matched perfectly!

This layout is for the Sucky Selfie Series.  We are getting pretty decent about being centered in the photo but we don't always check the zoom and we end up with this...pictures of teeth. ha!

I Didn't Forget About This Blog

I've been a busy little scrapper bee over the past few months.  Here are a few pages I have done since I last posted.

We have been taken lots of selfies this year and of course some of them are not so great.  I decided to incorporate them into my albums as part of a series.  Here's one of the better set of pictures we took.  This page is almost all Park Bench by Fancy Pants Design.  I ordered to whole collection and after moving it around for a bit, I applied Shimelle Laine's Perfect Collection process to it and made several layouts using up the collection.

On this layout, I sewed my first (and only) banner.  The papers are mostly from the Pebbles Sunnyside collection. I have to say it's one of my all time favorites.  The colors are so rich and vibrant.  I love that among the oranges and teals and hot pinks they included navy to kind of anchor it.

I dabbled with my first monthly kit club in the summer.  I dove head first into Noel Mignon's Kit Club.  I feel like it's the grand daddy of kits.  It is jam packed with papers and embellishments but I found it wasn't for me.  I resented getting white or craft card stock each month, who doesn't have that in their stash already? And how difficult is it to match white or craft cardstock to any collection? I thought coordination was part of what we paid for.  But I will say I received some beautiful papers that I really enjoyed working with.

This is one of the layouts where I used papers from one of these kits.  It's based on a Shimelle Laine sketch and except for the little tile letter stickers, uses items exclusively from the kit.  It came together beautifully!  The papers were from My Mind's Eye Notable Collection plus some thickers, simple stories letter tiles and some twine.

Other than being pictures of my cutie pie niece, there's nothing special about the layout.  I was trying to experiment with clustering there at the bottom.  There's some Beautiful Life by Echo Park and Little Yellow Bicycle Just Because plus thickers, always thickers. ha!

I completed this layout for a theme page challenge.  It's odd that it's for Halloween since it's a holiday I never celebrate (not for religious reasons but for "don't like costumes" reasons).  I think it's cute & simple. I recognize some K&Company paper but I can't remember what company made the die cuts.

I'll update more soon.  :)

Use it or Lose it Challenge Recap

Phew...I finally finished.  I completed 20 layouts using a stack of last chance papers and scraps.  I am happy it's over and while it was tedious to flip through the same papers over and over, I am kind of glad I did it.  These were papers that survived a couple of purges because I was sure I would use them. I did use a lot but I am very ready to give them away now.  As the end of the challenge drew near, I started to save the "good pictures" for when I could use new papers.   I can now donate the left over papers with no guilt.

This challenge taught me to be more prudent about buying papers and it's motivating me to use more from my stash before buying new supplies. I had to set aside and amazing assortment of new supplies to complete this challenge and I just can not wait to dig in.  I hope to feel that way with all my future purchases instead of getting used to seeing it pile up.

Here are all the layouts from this challenge which I started March 23rd.

A New View

I did it!!  This is the final layout from my Use it or Lose it Challenge.  It's a simple layout but I like it's simplicity.  These are some pictures of rides in Disney from a different angle, from Tom Sawyer's Island to be exact.

Use it or Lose it #20!!! - A New View

I used a cream bazzill cardstockfor a base and added some My Mind's Eye papers.  I sprinked some black Mr. Huey's Color Mist in opposing corners.  I stapled some some paper twine (how's that for a blast from the past??!).  The title is Jillibean Soup chipboard letters and Making Memories tiny letters.

Now the challenge is behind me.  The leftovers will go to my friend who works at a psych hospital.  She collected a ton of supplies back in January but said they can always use more.  I am so glad to get some things out of the house and that it will go to people who will enjoy it.

oops!

I am in the final stretch of my layout challenge and really really struggled with this one.  I don't like it at all.  I don't really care about telling this story.  I am just ready to be out of this challenge.

Use it or Lose it #19 - oops!

The papers are My Mind's Eye and Echo Park papers.  The journal block is from Echo Park as well.  The letters of American Crafts and the buttons are from my stash.

Stand Over There

Here are some more babysitting pictures.  It's the same night the pictures on Smile for the Camera were taken.  Once the picture was snapped, they would come running over to see the picture.  Then someone would say "Stand over there" so we could try taking another/better picture.  That never really happened

Use it or Lose it # 18: Stand Over There

This is My Mind's Eye and Studio Calico papers, Stampin' Up bling, Freckled Fawn wood veneers and some washi tape.  I border punched the lighter blue paper and added some stitching.  The sewing machine really gave me a hard time, I think I need to get better thread.

Fun Times

Last year, I went to Florida with my sister and her kids to visit our mother.  Most of our family lives in the area so we hosted a get together at the hotel so we could see everyone and so they could all meet Ben and Rebecca.  There are a host of pictures from the afternoon.  It was a really fun day and it was so terrific to see everyone at once.

Use it or Lose it # 17: Fun Times

Ok, surprise surprise, I used My Mind's eye papers here.  There is also Making Memories (pink polka dot) and bazzill cardstock. I also used bakers twine from the Twinery, Stampin' Up bling, American Crafts Thickers and a frame from my stash.

This layout is based on a sketch from Scrapbook Generations which I followed almost completely.  I hand cut the larger clouds and used a Fiskars punch for the smaller one.  The butterfly is from a sizzix die.  I cut two, sewed it down the middle and used some foam dots in between the layers for some dimension.

Date Day

No, not date night.  Don's not much of a night owl so we tend to do things in the afternoon and then go for dinner instead of the other way around.  On this date, we saw Moneyball which was pretty good.  It involved sports, rooting for the underdog, math and Brad Pitt all in one.  Eddie's Sweet Shop is right across the street.  They are one of the few original homemade ice cream parlors that are left in the area.  There are little flecks of vanilla in the ice cream.  So good!

Use it or Lose it Challenge #16: Date Day

I used a lot of different papers here.  The base is Die Cuts With a View, then My Mind's Eye they rest are from my scraps box and include more My Mind's Eye, Studio Calico, Jillibean Soup and October Afternoon.  I outlined them all with my trusty sharpie.  I used American Craft Thickers, Mr. Huey's Color Mists, a word wood veneer by Freckled Fawn plus some buttons and bling from my stash.

A Very Punny Ride

These are just some pictures from the Jungle Cruise ride line at Disney World.  It's one of our favorites - it's silly and relaxing.  The journaling is about how the tour guides used to be able to ad lib their spiel.  That must have been funny if you had a guide with a great sense of humor.  I guess this became a problem at some point so now there's a Disney approved script they need to follow but according to one guide, there are several options for each "joke point" so the ride is different each time.  The passengers play a part too - if there's someone a little outgoing on the boat, they might interact with the guide which also makes the ride unique.

Use it or Lose it Challenge #15 - The Jungle Cruise

There is My Mind's Eye and Die Cuts with a View patterned paper and Bazzill cardstock.  The title is anchored on some grey polka dot washi tape, using Jillibean Soup chipboard letters which I outlined with my trusty sharpie pen along with Simple Stories letter stickers.  I punched out some circles and stars and added some Oriental Trading pearls to the corners.

I can't say that I am pleased with this layout.  At first, I liked the wood grain with the blue paper.  It needed something and I thought it the red border would help but I think it looks too heavy.  I choked on embellishing and went with stars but I think they look western although looking at it on my screen it actually feels Christmas-y.  I don't know if I should pop the whole thing off the blue paper and put it on kraft or something else.  Of course that means there's the risk of messing up the whole thing because the blue flowers are glued down to the wood grain.  To get out of this challenge, I'll leave it for now and maybe reconsider it in the future.

What do you do when you really struggle with the final product?

Tech Savvy

As you can probably tell by now, I spend a lot of time with my sister and her kids. We usually grab a bite to eat and do something fun.  Some days it's shopping, some it's going to a park or a movie.  There's one mall with lots of children stores and a carousel.  This day we went to the Grand Luxe Cafe for breakfast.  Ben and Rebecca were playing games on their leap pads or on an iPhone.  Here my sister is showing Rebecca how to play a game and then you see her playing it.  I am sure in another couple of years they will know more about electronics than me.

Use it or Lose It Challenge #14: Tech Savvy

All the patterned papers are from My Mind's Eye cut into strips and sewn onto white Bazzill Cardstock.  I trimmed the excess threads and dotted some glossy accents on those points and taped down the end points on the back.  I don't know if it's necessary but I didn't want to find out the thread will come undone the hard way.

The title is on a My Mind's Eye title card, I liked the color and shape but the wording didn't work so I covered it with additional cardstock and place the title there with American Craft Thickers and Simple Stories letter stickers.

All the edges were inked. The butterfly stamp is from Jillibean Soup and I added a frosted heart from my stash with some embroidery floss.

Hip Hip Hooray...it's May!

Welcome to May!!

It's going to be a big month.  In no particular order we have National Scrapbooking Day, Memorial Day (the unofficial start of summer) and vacation!

I don't have special plans for National Scrapbooking Day.  Big Picture Scrapbooking is hosting a Creative Crop with 10 hours of challenges, chats and prizes.  It's free to join!  My friends and I were talking about doing a virtual crop.  We'll see.  I also have a dentist appointment that day.

For vacation, we are going to Palm Harbor, FL to visit my mother for mother's day.  Most of my extended family is in the area, so I get to see them too.  Then we are headed to Disney for a few days.  It's been a long year so far and I am ready to get away for a stretch and not just a day or two.  We are returning to the Boardwalk and reserved a Boardwalk view this time.  There might be some noise from the hustle and bustle of the Boardwalk activity but it can't be worse than pool games.  That's just brutal.  Anyways, we'll be gone for about a week and I can. not. wait.

Soon after that, Memorial Day is here.  Three day weekend...yay!  Let the summer begin!

My April Goal Update:
1. Complete the Use it or Lose it Challenge - I have 4 pages to go.  You'll see them on future posts.
2. Blog regularly - I slacked off a bit but I am ok with 12 posts for April.
3. Move completed layouts to d-ring albums - I took them out of the post bound albums but I considering alternative storage methods.

I got a late start on the 50 Projects or Bust challenge since I placed some orders last month.  My official start date is April 18, 2013.  No more purchases until I complete 50 Projects.  I have five done so far.

My Goals for May:
1. Finish the Use it or Lose it Challenge
2. Take tons of pictures
3. Get half way through the 50 Projects or Bust Challenge
4. Participate in the National Scrapbooking day festivities on A Cherry on Top.

Do you have any scrap goals for this month?

Silly Girl

These pictures were taken on the 20th anniversary of my father's death.  My mother happened to be in town helping me as I recovered from surgery so the three of us had lunch, went to the cemetery and then to my sister's for a change of scenery and so my mother could spend some time with the kids.  They were just being silly and fun like always.  Rebecca is only 16 months here.  She figured out how to make herself disappear behind the curtains.

Use it or Lose it Challenge #13: Silly Girl

On this layout, I used a whole bunch of patterned papers:
Bazzill Cardstock - the kraft background and yellow scalloped circle
Flair Designs - Pink & yellow paper
My Mind's Eye - Green floral, yellow polka dot (butterfly)
Die Cuts With a View - Bluish Green circle on the embellishment
Studio Calico - green ledger paper
Vellum from Staples

There is also American Craft thickers and Stampin' Up rhinestones.  There is machine stitching on the embellishments and around the edge of the pink paper.

Smile for the Camera

Whenever I babysit, I always take pictures.  Let me rephrase that, they take pictures.  They are always at some weird angle, too close, too far way and generally out of focus.  Ben took these pictures, he got a little close, don't ya think?  But I love them.

Use it or Lose it Challenge # 12: Smile for the Camera

I used My Mind's Eye and Die Cuts With a View papers, Freckled Fawn wooden asterisks, bakers twine from the Twinery, American Craft Thickers.

The big red Sizzix made a comeback for this layout - I used it to cut out all the tags and emboss some of them.  I love how they look layered like that.  I also overcame my fear of the sewing machine and added some stitching along the photos.  There will be more of that in the next few pages.

Weirdo Cat

I’m sure Bob is not the weirdest cat on the planet but she must rank.  Except for waking me up for breakfast every day, she’s a pretty sweet cat.  She even wins over people who are not cat lovers, particularly my mother and brother in law.  She’s cute and she readily purrs.  She’s not shy and will almost always come out for company; she even jumped up on Don’s aunt one night she was over for dinner.  Not so say she isn’t a kook!  See how she is sitting on the door jam with her face right against the doorway.  She does that all the time, all over the apartment – she’ll also sit facing a wall, the arm to the sofa.

Use it or Lose it Challenge # 10 – Weirdo Cat

This layout uses paper from My Minds Eye, DCWV and Artic Frog.  The lettering is from America Crafts, Veneers are from Freckled Fawn and the bracket is a MME die cut.

I didn't think I would like the Dear Lizzy vinyl letters as much as I do.  I keep using them to use them up but I realized that I really like the size and the font.

Sunday Fun

This is a companion page to yesterday's layout.  We ended up at the Milford Mall which was pretty big.  We did some shopping, had pretzels, more shopping, had ice cream.  They had a playground area which would have been fantastic if there weren't big kids taking over the whole thing.  By big, I mean 12, 13 years old.  They were just sitting on some of the apparatus taking up space.

Use it or Lose Challenge #10: Sunday Fun

This layout used My Mind's Eye, Making Memories and Die Cuts With a View papers, American Craft Thickers, wood veneers by Studio Calico (chevron) and Freckled Fawn (arrow), assorted buttons and a journaling card by Echo Park.

Quiet Ride

During Super Storm Sandy, my sister lost power for about 8 days.  They got their hands on a generator so it wasn't as bad as it could be but it wasn't fun.  It was noisy and ran on gas which was sparse so they just plugged in enough to have some lights, a warm area in the house and the television for the kids.  Luckily, her good friend around the corner had a gas water heater so they went there for baths.  Meals were mostly take out or on the fly.  It could have been worse but it was exhausting.

On this day, she needed to get some gas and we thought it would be easier in Connecticut since they didn't seem to have the shortage of NY and the rationing in NJ.  We were right!  We pulled into a gas station about 20 minutes away, no line, no price gouging.

Use it or Lose it Challenge # 9: Quiet Ride

You'll see there are lots of sleeping kid pictures in my layouts.  They look like angels when they are sleeping. Normally, they are quite the chatterboxes and their is lots of singing and carrying on in the car.  Not today, they slept for a good portion of the ride.  Although I loved the look on Ben's face when he woke up and saw me in the car, then woke up Becca to tell her that Ti Ti was here.  Then she gets the same look.

In this layout, I used patterned papers from Making Memories and My Mind's Eye, green pearls from Oriental Trading and American Craft Thickers.  I used a library card stamp for the journaling, I don't remember the company, plus I pulled out an assortment of punches:  EK success embossed scallop and notebook paper border punches, Martha Stewart heart punch and a Creative Memories circle punch.

Freckled Fawn

They deserve a little shout out...

Back in November, I placed my first order with them for some wood veneers.  I actually mentioned them in first post of my blog. They shipped right away and while the delivery confirmation showed they were delivered, they apparently went to the wrong address.  I reordered the veneers since they are super cute and I still wanted them. Again, they shipped right away and this time, they were delivered to my mailbox!

I sent an email to them asking (hoping) the original package was returned to them but they weren't.  They were kind enough to refund my original purchase and offered a gift code for the problems with the order, even though it wasn't their fault at all.

Wouldn't you know it?  The original order showed up the other day!  Exactly four months after the delivery confirmation date!  Again, their service is outstanding and turned down my offer to return them.

I could not recommend them enough!  Really great products, reasonable prices, fast shipping and amazing service!

Happy Monday!

Ooops...
I've been busy with my mother's visit and celebrating my nephew's fourth birthday so I haven't spent any time scrapbooking or blogging in the past few days.  Hopefully that will change after tonight.

The only scrap related news I have today is that a friend of mine gave me a pile of her wedding pictures to make a scrapbook album for her and her husband.  They've been married for almost 7 years so there's no rush but it will be nice to work on different pictures.  Although last year, after I finished up my third major gift album in a row, I declared that I was happy to work on my own pictures.

Is that ScrapADD??

Before and After

2012 was the second year in a row we had measurable snow in the fall.  In 2011, it was right before Halloween and it was right after in 2012.  When ever it snows, I usually take a picture of the tree across the street from the house.  I think it looks pretty covered in snow.  This time took another picture to capture the fall leaves that were revealed when the snow melted.

Use it or Lose it Challenge #8:  Before & After

Here I matted My Mind's Eye paper onto white cardstock and added some trim from my scraps which reflects the scenes in each photo.  The title is American Craft thickers and a Studio Calico stamp.

Just Chillin'

Yep, still in Disney.  This is from the Expedition Everest line in Animal Kingdom.  Like everything there it's well themed so you don't realize how long the line is and I suppose we're not supposed to mind the wait as much if it's pretty.  This line is particularly well designed.  There's a hunting cabin with artifacts from the Himalayas and also areas designed to look like area villages.

Themed space on the Expedition Everest queue.

Use it or Lose it Challenge # 7:  Just Chillin'

The Audela des Cimes paper is a perfect match for these waiting on line pictures.  It very much has an outdoor feel and while it borders on tropical, I think it works for these pictures.  The photos are matted with My Mind's Eye paper from the Bella Bvd collection.  The paper does the work here so I kept the embellishments to a minimum: Jillibean labels, buttons from my stash and Simple Stories letter stickers.

Sleepy Head

Poor guy was so beat he actually dosed off on the short ride from EPCOT back to the resort.

Use it or Lose it Challenge #6: Sleepy Head

This is a super simple layout using a single photo.  I noticed that I clustered everything together on the last few layouts I made, I decided to spread things out a bit here.  The orange paper matches the photo almost perfectly so I went with that. For some interest, I added the little strips to the left.  Since this page has a short title, I decided to have it overlap the photo.  The journaling was written strips of patterned paper. There are strips of washi tape under the title to anchor it and it's also used in the negative space on the bottom of the page.

This page hast patterned paper from My Minds Eye (background, green stars), Die Cuts with A View (white  with multi colors, orange) and Echo Park (blue chevron) plus some washi and Stampin' Up rhinestones.

To the Left on Main Street

Here's another entry to the Disney album.  I should go through it one day and make a list of what I have covered already so I can fill in the blanks on future trips.

Use it or Lose it Challenge #5: To the Left on Main Street

I started with white card stock here.  The block of pattern papers are Echo Park, the yellow border  is the branding strip from Pebbles Inc Family Ties collection.  The arrows and sticker are also Echo Park.  The title is (of course) Simple Stories and American Craft thickers.  I stopped there for a while but felt it needed something so I added the sprinkled Mr. Huey's mist and some pastel colored rhinestones from Oriental Trading.
